What is the meaning of Ascension?
Acts 1:8-9 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be witnesses to me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. And when he said this, when they saw him, he was lifted up on high, and a cloud received him, hiding him from their eyes.
After the resurrection from the dead of Jesus Christ, He appeared during 40 days for many believers. Jesus Christ could not remain on earth, because He had a work to do in Heaven:
John 14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled; If you believe in God, believe in me too. In my Father's house there are many mansions; If it were not so, I would have told you, for I am going to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, you may be also.
The task of Jesus Christ in Heaven is to prepare our home eternal, of all those who believe in Him, and leave it ready. When all the houses for all believers are ready, under the orders of His Father, it will be the sound of the trumpet and the first Coming of Christ to raise believers to Heaven takes place.
Jesus Christ also could not stay on earth, because the Holy Spirit should and must dwell in every man who accepts Jesus Christ as his Savior. Only through the Holy Spirit can the believing sinner be convinced of sin, and repent and know the Will of the Lord Jesus Christ.
GIVE ATTENTION. The time after the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the time of the Apostles are a TRANSITIONAL PHASE. In Old Testament times, the Holy Spirit could NOT make indwelling, because man was a sinner and Jesus had not yet died for man's sin. Only a temporary fulfillment with the Spirit, as with kings Saul and David, the prophets Elijah and Elisha was possible, but a permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit was not.
According to the Jews, the Holy Spirit was only for the Jewish people and not for the Gentiles. This is an important fact and later we will see how God the apostles also had to convince that the gospel was and was intended for non-Jews, including baptism and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. So this transition phase. Things that happen in this transition phase, we cannot automatically assume and place in our current time.
Before the Ascension of Jesus Christ, the disciples are commanded to wait for the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:5 You will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not long after these days.
Therefore, a baptism of the Holy Spirit, because the Old Testament believer could not receive any indwelling of the Holy Spirit! First, Jesus had to die for man's sin and overcome death and the ascension of the dead. Man had to first be freed from his sinful nature and be cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. This first baptism (=indwelling) of the Holy Spirit for the first time would come after Pentecost.
What is the meaning of Pentecost
Acts 2:1- 4 When the day of Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all gathered together in one place; and suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the whole house in which they were sitting. And there were seen by them parted tongues, as it were of fire, which rested upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance.
At the baptism of Jesus, the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove.
On the disciples, the Holy Spirit descended in the form of fire.
GIVE GOOD ATTENTION, this form of baptism (baptism in the Holy Spirit) happens with a phenomenon of fire.
It is the first manifestation of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the sinner. This baptism is NOT repeated in the call of Petrus in Acts 2:38 and in those who accept the call and allow themselves to be baptized (three thousand) in Acts 2:41. This is an important fact. I believe that today there is no longer a baptism of the Holy Spirit, BECAUSE IMMEDIATELY of the sinner's acceptance of Jesus Christ, immediately the Holy Spirit takes up residence in the believer and receives the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:38 And Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
God, the Father, shows here on the first day of Pentecost, through which fire rose in the disciples, that He accepts the work of Jesus Christ and He gives the Holy Spirit to each one who believes in the work of salvation through His Son Jesus Christ.
The work of the Holy Spirit is immediately visible (Consider this is a transitional demonstration). The prophets, Moses, Elijah and Elisha showed their strength (from God obtained) by extraordinary miracles. Here is the power of the Holy Spirit, indicated by "illiterate (unskilled)" fishermen who speak in a DIFFERENT language. Not in a language of angels, nor a divine language. NO, in another language, audible and understandable, for those who come from abroad (foreign land). Like an unskilled Brazilian, he suddenly speaks the English language.
Acts 3:5-11 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, religious men, from every nation that are under the sky. 6 And when the voice ran, a crowd came together and was confused, because everyone heard them speaking in their own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying to one another: Why! Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 How then do we hear them, each one, in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes, Elamites and those living in Mesopotamia, and Judea, and Cappadocia, and Pontus, and Asia, 10 and Phrygia, and Pamphylia, Egypt and parts of Libya, along with Cyrene, and Roman aliens (both Jews and proselytes ), 11 and Cretans, and Arabs, we have all heard them in our own languages speak of the greatness of God.
This is very different than speaking in tongues! What an incomprehensible language is spoken and explanation is NECESSARY!
Speaking in strange tongues we no longer see in the letters of the Apostles. Only Paul talked about speaking in tongues in his letters, and then I come back to that later.
Expanded the Gospel to the Gentiles
In Acts 10, the gospel extended to the Gentiles. gentiles. Cornelius, a centurion, of Italian origin, is a pious man, who worships with his entire household, who charity (looks at the poor), well known to the Jews and worships God (the God of the Jews). Despite everything good work, despite the fact that he was a good man, this was NOT enough for his salvation and going to Heaven. He was a sinner, needing salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ.
Peter has a vision and God's command to eat unclean animals for the Jews. the vision was repeated three times.
Cornelius sent men, commissioned by God, to Peter. And he invited all his family and friends to listen to what Pedro had to say. He is not selfish, he shared the good news.
In verse 24, Peter comes to the conclusion that the good news is also intended for the Gentiles.
Acts 10:43-48 To this all the prophets bear witness, that all who believe in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name. And while Peter was still saying these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. And the faithful who were of the circumcision, as many as had come with Peter, marveled that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out also upon the Gentiles. Because they heard them speak in tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered: Can anyone refuse water, lest they be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit as we have? And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. So they asked him to stay with them for a few days.
In verse 43 the condition is given: believe in Jesus Christ to receive forgiveness of sins. Cornelio and his congregation accept him, and the result is clear in verses 44-46. At the moment of acceptance and faith in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit indwells the believer. Because this is the second time (the first time was with the Ethiopian Eunuch, however, without a clear sign of the indwelling Holy Spirit) that Gentiles are included in the people of Jesus Christ, this must be clearly shown to Peter. . For Peter, because he is the person on whom the rock will be built (Matthew 16:19). It is Peter who is amazed (verse 45) that the gift of the Holy Spirit was given to the Gentiles. Verse 46, Peter and his companions heard speaking in strange tongues. This speaking in tongues is UNDERSTANDABLE to them because they have heard people magnify God! Not speaking cryptic language, NO, they heard God magnify. Which is a lot different than the believers/pastors/elders who are now speaking in tongues and no one understands what they say.
Verses 47 and 48 are very clear. Cornelis and his companions come to faith in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit made indwelling. The logical consequence is that they should be baptized with water.
Note: It is NOT true that only the Holy Spirit takes up residence after water baptism! First, it is coming to faith, immediately followed by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, as in verses 43 and 44, then baptism with water.
Speaking in tongues
Unlike the letters Of the other apostles, it is only Paul, who writes about speaking in tongues and being stretched out in 1 Corinthians 14. Here Paul is clear.
Verse 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, if not to God; because no one understands him, and in the spirit he speaks in mysteries.
Speaking in strange tongues is initially speaking with God and NOT speaking in public. Speaking in strange tongues, without explanation, is like the sound of a flute or a zither, with no difference in tone.
Ho, ho, but verse 5 and verse 18? That Paul speaks in many tongues is not surprising. Paul became being filled with the Holy Spirit to speak in many foreign languages (foreign countries he visited, proclaimed the Gospel on the island after the shipwreck in the language of the island's residents). But ok, here he probably refers to the praise of God, speaking a language incomprehensible to humans.
But verse 19 is clear, HE DOESN'T SPEAK FOREIGN LANGUAGES FOR LONG MINUTES IN CHURCH. Why? Because it's useless, it doesn't support and it doesn't teach. It is of no use to church members. Verses 27-28 are clear. EXPLANATION IS NECESSARY, otherwise one must remain silent. And there is a prophecy, so this IS more important, than speaking in tongues. Remember that speaking in tongues is a lesser gift of the Holy Spirit.
Research the source of speaking in tongues
Speaking in tongues should not be any expression of a gift of spirit. I have the feeling that some believer/pastors/elders speak in public in strange tongues, to show their gift of spirit to others. Here it is often just speaking in strange tongues, without anyone knowing what the person is saying, without anyone being able to give an explanation. This is why it can be dangerous to speak in strange tongues, witness the neighbor.
Source: Internet Bijbelschool (in Dutch). An example of a sister in the church. They came into the occult after a "woman of prayer" had prayed over her in strange tongues. This happened at a charismatic denominational meeting "Woman Aglow" women's movement. The sister was, in that meeting, deceived by a prophecy that the woman of prayer spoke in her talk. The praying woman said, "The Lord tells me there is someone here who is going through hard times, but the Lord says, I am with you." This is, of course, an open shot at goal, because in every meeting, there is some person who is suffering. But the church sister had that difficult time, and she thought that the "prophecy" was intended for her. Then she looked for the prophetess. He spoke under the prophecy and was destined for it. He also told them something about his struggle. The "praying" woman began to pray with her. She agreed. While the praying woman was praying, she put her hand on her sister's shoulder (laying on of hands!!!!) and after some time she changed to speaking in tongues (no translation). That night, in the sister's house all kinds of occultism took place (sounds, spiritual appearances, she was even physically harassed by spiritual appearances) there was a terrible fear beneath her. She sought help from our church leader. After prayerful preparation, some brothers visited her. She confessed to the Lord that she allowed him to put her hands on her shoulders and let her pray in strange tongues. Then the brothers ordered, in the name of Jesus, that the evil powers no longer bother her. The hidden phenomena disappeared from here. What this praying woman speaking in tongues delivered was not a blessing of the Holy Spirit, but a possession of demons.
A while back, a brother from Africa spoke about one of our ancient elders. In a large Pentecostal church in Rotterdam, he was one of the participants. This old man spoke in strange tongues, terrible slander in an African language known to him. While the Christians and the person speaking thought it was the Holy Spirit who was speaking. What is the meaning of Pentecost?
Pentecost (Koinè: Πεντηκοστή, Pentèkostè, "the fiftieth [day]") or Sinksen [notes 1] is a Christian holiday, commemorating the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
It is celebrated on the Sunday that falls 50 days after Easter and 10 days after the Ascension.
For example, the use of flames, which symbolize 'tongues of fire', but also the wind, such as the breath of God and the dove. The dove symbolizes simplicity and purity, but also the Holy Spirit.
The Bible tells us that this 'outpouring' was exactly 50 days after Jesus' resurrection from the dead, when a Jewish harvest festival was also being celebrated.
What also plays a role is that the first time Pentecost coincided with a Jewish festival: Shavoet, also known as the Feast of Weeks, which was celebrated exactly seven weeks after Passover. Seven is an important number in Judaism: it is a prime number for perfection. With Easter (Easter with Christians) the barley harvest was celebrated and also the liberation from Egypt.
THE ORIGINAL FEAST OF PENTECOST
After Jesus returned to heaven, his followers went to Jerusalem. Jesus had asked them to wait there for a promise yet to be fulfilled. And after 10 days of prayer and waiting the time came; the promise, which was the Holy Spirit, was poured out. The apostles were suddenly able to speak in many other languages, inspired by the Holy Spirit. The spectators thought they were drunk, but the apostle Peter explains to them that they are filled with the Holy Spirit.
Etymology and origin
The Greek term Πεντηκοστή, Pentèkoste for Pentecost, was used in the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible) into Hebrew שבועות, Shavuot, Shavuot, "Feast of Weeks", a harvest festival. In Judaism, this festival is celebrated 50 days after the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Matzah). It is a harvest festival because it marks the end of the wheat harvest that begins at Easter. The Feast of Weeks also commemorates the gift of the Torah to Moses at Sinai.
In Acts there are mentioned about 120 disciples who stayed together in an upper room in Jerusalem in the days after Jesus' ascension. After the influx of Pentecost students, the first mention is made of a community. This is generally seen as the beginning of the Church. Members met daily at the Jewish temple, sharing meals together at home. The people who were now filled with the Holy Spirit went out and spoke in tongues, prophesied and proclaimed the gospel in different languages. The Apostle Peter took the floor and gave a speech focused on the death and resurrection of Jesus. He explained that all these events had already been predicted by the prophet Joel.
Peter admonished the crowd to turn to Jesus for forgiveness of sins. When someone asked how, he replied: "Repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins, and you will receive the Holy Spirit."
It is said that three thousand people responded to this call and were baptized on the same day.
Johann Sebastian Bach wrote three cantatas for the first day of Pentecost: BWV 34, 74 and 173, for the second day of Pentecost two cantatas: BWV 68 and 174, and for the third day of Pentecost two cantatas: BWV 175 and 184.
